Butterfly Pea powder – The Power Powder! is known to help

Also known as Asian Pigeon Wings, Blue Bell Vine, Blue Pea, Cordofan Pea and Darwin pea, ‘Butterfly Pea’ (Clitoria ternatea) is an amazing brain boosting herb native to tropical equatorial Asia. A traditional Ceylon and Ayurvedic medicine, Clitoria Ternatea has been consumed for centuries as a memory enhancer, brain booster, anti-stress and calmative agent.

What is Butterfly Pea Tea?

Butterfly pea flower tea is a caffeine-free herbal tea, or tisane, beverage made from a decoction or infusion of the leaves of the Clitoria ternatea plant and dried Lemongrass or dried Pandanus leaf. The ternatea is also known as butterfly-pea, blue-pea, Aprajita, Cordofan pea, or Asian pigeon wings.

Derived from a plant that is common to most southeast Asian countries, butterfly pea flower tea has been brewed for centuries but only recently been introduced to tea drinkers outside the indigenous area. Butterfly pea flower tea retains many of the medicinal properties of the Clitoria ternatea as well as extracting the deep blue color of the petals that have made the plant a popular dye for centuries. One of the aspects of the tea is the fact that the liquid changes color based on the pH level of the substance added to it, for instance, adding lemon juice to the tea will turn it purple.

Butterfly Pea powder is known as a ’superfood’ – a totally gorgeous looking blue natural food coloring powder that comes from the dried flowers of the Clitorea Ternatea plant known as the Butterfly Pea.  Butterfly Pea Powder is totally natural, healthy and Caffeine free, full of healthy minerals and trace elements.  Butterfly Pea powder is light blue in color as a powder and can be used in cookery, where it has many and varied roles in cake making, and confectionery as well as cocktails, or just as a healthy infusion or ’Matcha’ drink.

Butterfly Pea powder – The Power Powder!

blue butterfly pea powder, to make magical ’Mocktail’ drinks or add to food, one spoonful of butterfly pea powder in a glass of water or lemonade is sufficient.  Butterfly Pea powder is also great for making blue Chai and lattes.  It is Caffeine free and totally natural and organic therefore great for Vegans and health enthusiasts, and does not need preservatives, or have any additives.

The pretty blue powder is organic, makes the most attractive looking and unusual cakes, when added directly to the cake mixture and to the icing.  You can add Butterfly Pea powder or the dried or fresh flowers to Gin, which will color it for unusual cocktails.

When making cocktails, you can add the blue to ice cubes, or make cocktails of different colors using syrups made from the blue powder and lemonade.    Watch the colors change when you add blue ice cubes to your drinks!  Squeeze some lime gently into the top of your blue tea, and you will see a lovely purple shade develop at the top.

The Butterfly Pea itself has a slightly mild and earthy taste.  But this belies its healthful properties.  Butterfly Pea is famous for being a natural Nootropic (quite simply, it makes your brain function better) so its a great natural pick me up at any time of day, better than other cognitive enhancing ’smart’ drugs you could buy over the counter. For a healthy drink, the butterfly pea powder can be used as a healthy ’Matcha’ tea drink mixed with milk, honey, etc.

Rinse 2 cups of white rice. Then add it to cooker bowl. Add ½ tsp of Food to Live Butterfly Pea Flower Powder, 3 tbsp oil, a pinch of salt, and 4 cups of water. Stir well and place in a slow cooker. Enjoy Rainbow Blue Butterfly Pea Rice!

If you are a coffee person, try making butterfly pea latte. You will need milk (of your choice), butterfly pea powder, maple syrup or honey (or other sweetener of your choice). Heat milk over the stove and whisk your tea powder in while it heats. To make the latte, whisk 1 teaspoon of butterfly pea powder and 1 teaspoon of maple syrup or honey in with about 1/8 cup of your milk in a mug.

Color Changing Butterfly Pea Drinks

Butterfly Pea Tea is often drink with added ’extras’ and the most interesting thing about it is the special colour changing character when you change the pH value.  Adding acidic ingredients turns the blue an even deeper shade of purple/indigo whereas adding alkaline substances like Hibiscus, will result in a red colour.

Butterfly Pea Powder or Flowers?

You can use butterfly pea powder to make tea, but more popular are the actual butterfly pea flowers, either fresh or dried, steeped in hot water or as an infusion.  Butterfly pea tea is an even more healthy alternative to the usual green teas that are more commonly available and it has been used in the far East for centuries as a food healthy supplement.  One handful of flowers in a bowl of water will make tea for several people.  The brightness of the blue result will depend on how long you boil the water – darker blue the longer you boil it.
