interesting stories

”We got a call about a bike being run over in a parking lot. The mother said it was her daughter’s new bicycle that she had received for Christmas. The worst part is that the driver didn’t even stop. So the next day, we purchased a new bicycle and surprised the little one along with a doll.

Not a famous five. This is Five’s Story

“His name is Five. That’s what he goes by and that’s what everyone knows him by. Five. Well, Five is a waiter at the 42nd Street Oyster Bar in Raleigh, North Carolina. It’s one of the two jobs he works, when he not taking classes at the local college. Humble guy. Doesn’t like attention. But sometimes, when he does what he does, that attention can’t really be avoided. One day, Lee and his mom, Linda, came into the oyster bar and Linda started feeding her son, who has cerebral palsy.

And even though Five was busy with other customers, he didn’t want Linda’s meal to get cold, so he asked some other workers to cover for him, while he took over the feeding chore from Linda so she could enjoy her meal while it was hot. Linda took some photos of Five feeding Lee and it got a lot of attention on social media. And now, many people recognize him when he’s out and about. And he’s received letters from all over the world. And it’s all been a little overwhelming for the shy, humble guy who tries to avoid the spotlight. But, as you can see, doing kind deeds doesn’t always go unnoticed.”

Letter From Heaven

Our 14-year-old dog Abbey died last month. The day after she passed away my 4-year-old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so, and she dictated these words:

Dear God,

Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick.

I hope you will play with her. She likes to swim and play with balls. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her.

Love, Meredith

We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letterbox at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had.

Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed, ‘To Meredith’ in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, ‘When a Pet Dies.’ Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page were the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note:

Dear Meredith,

Abbey arrived safely in heaven. Having the picture was a big help and I recognized her right away.

Abbey isn’t sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don’t need our bodies in heaven, I don’t have any pockets to keep your picture in so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by.

Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and sending it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I’m easy to find. I am wherever there is love.

Love, God

Lonely Women

On a chilly California afternoon, Deputies Anderson and Arbuckle, with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, pulled into a Denny’s restaurant for lunch. They noticed a young woman sitting all by herself in the parking lot, and she seemed distraught. And it looked like she had a really bright-colored polka dot suitcase that apparently carried everything she owned.

Deputy Anderson knew something was wrong, so he approached her and politely asked her some questions. The young woman was all by herself… stranded, with no transportation. So the officers invited her into the restaurant with them and asked her to join them for a meal, which they paid for out of their own pocket.

But something kept nagging at Deputy Anderson. He wondered how she was gonna get back home. After the meal, the deputies had her follow them out to their squad car, and they drove her to the nearest Greyhound bus station. Deputy Anderson then bought her a bus ticket so she could get back home.

The officers’ story about the young woman touched everyone in the department, and it was posted on their website. On the story, it said their “actions demonstrate adherence to the Mission, Vision, and Values of our Department, most notably a concern for the community and treating the woman with empathy and respect when she was in a bad situation.”

Mind the Gap

In London, there’s a woman who goes every day on the subway and sits on the dock just to listen to the announcement recorded by her husband in 1950.

Margaret McCollum after the death of her Oswald Laurence, sits on the bench waiting to hear this recording that became one of London’s most famous “Mind the gap” (attention the space between the train and the dock).

In 2003, Oswald died leaving a huge void in Margaret’s heart. So Margaret found a way to feel his presence closest. But from the day after more than half a century, this voice was replaced by an empty electronic recording. Out of distress Margaret asked this cassette tape to the London subway transport company to continue listening to her husband’s voice at home.

But, knowing the moving history, the company decided to restore the announcement in the only stop near the house where the woman lives, specifically at the Embankment stop of Northern Line, where all passengers can listen today Oswald Laurence’s voice and to think that eternal love really exists.

Wonderful gesture by the authorities

She Wanted clear

Today I painted a new residents nails at work and as we were going over colors, she mentioned she wanted clear. The only thought that came to my mind was “CLEAR?! That’s no fun.” I asked her why she wanted clear and she said, “My hands are ugly, I don’t want to draw attention to them.” I then carefully responded with, “Your hands tell the story of your life. They tell the story of love, of care and adventure. These hands have touched and held things that most people can only wish to one day.” And with that, she went with the color pink for her nails.Sometimes what we are so insecure with, others find beauty in.

Will’s will

“This is Will. 14 years ago, he was homeless and addicted to heroin. We met as he was digging in the dumpster looking for recyclables.

I asked him what possessed a man to do such a thing… he shared that his wife died unexpectedly and in the wake of her death, he tried heroin- ONE TIME and became addicted. He lost his home and job as a result of his addiction.

Over the next several months, Will and I developed a friendship. I looked forward to posting at hatch and Herndon in hopes I’d get to see him. I liked him more than my partner at the time so I enjoyed seeing him as often as I could. We helped each other through a few tough times by offering advice and life experience. Then one day he was gone! I never saw him again…. over the years I’ve wondered what happened to him. I wondered if he was even alive.

God allowed our paths to cross again… ironically in a different Chevron. He was waiting for me outside the bathroom. He stood there with tears in his eyes and asked if I remembered him.

It took me about two seconds, and I knew. It was my Will!! He nostalgically reminded me about a pair of boots and a jacket I gave him to make sure he didn’t freeze. I also gave him $7 to get his ID… with a promise that he wouldn’t spend it on drugs. Will kept his promise.

He got his ID, a job, and later a wife. Will also found grace in the arms of our heavenly creator. We totally snot cried in the middle of the store before asking the clerk to take our picture.

I wanted to share this story because kindness matters. Kindness can change the course of someone’s world. You may never know it, but Will is proof of that.Be Kind in all you do. One day it will find you and overwhelm you with eternal gratitude.”
