One of the best and most prestigious military academies in the world is the USMA, also known as West Point. Nobody takes that reputation lightly. Although non-U.S. citizens are permitted to apply, students nearly always need to be nominated by a U.S. Congressman (or lady) in order to be accepted.

Additionally, there is a stringent honor code, and students are expected to excel academically as well as develop their leadership and physical abilities in the military. There are no fees at West Point, but upon graduation, students must report for active duty in the Army. The school is a national monument and is located on a scenic hill overlooking the Hudson River. Its distinguished graduates include two presidents, numerous well-known generals, and 74 Medal of Honor recipients.

West Point was transformed into a fortified military command by General George Washington. Following the country’s declaration of independence, a number of influential figures, notably Washington and John Adams, felt that the military’s reliance on foreign soldiers and technicians needed to be ended. President Thomas subsequently signed the law creating the United States Military Academy in 1802.

It seemed inevitable that West Point would be the place. The goal of West Point is to help cadets grow into moral individuals who will serve the Army and the country with selflessness. Cadets are appointed as second lieutenants in the American Army after graduation. “Much of the history we teach was made by people we taught” is the de facto motto of West Point.

Indeed, the Academy has given birth to numerous individuals who have influenced both American and global history. A large list of notable alumni from West Point includes two presidents: Ulysses S. Grant and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson are two more Civil War generals. West Point produced a number of significant World War II generals, including Douglas MacArthur, George S. Patton, Omar Bradley, and Henry H. Arnold.

When the Royal Naval Air Service split from the Royal Flying Corps in 1915, the U.K. Air Force continued to be based at the Royal Navy air training facility. Under the direction of Commodore Godfrey Paine, a new flight training academy for the Royal Navy was built at Cranwell.

Cranwell was a Royal Air Force facility for the remainder of World War I after the Royal Air Force was established in 1918. When hostilities ended, Chief of Air Staff Sir Hugh Trenchard intended to keep the Royal Air Force as a separate service. Cranwell was the ideal location to provide fundamental flight training, intellectual education, and deliberately mold upcoming RAF leaders.

As Sir Trenchard remarked to his biographer, “The cadets would find life cheaper, healthier, and more wholesome marooned in the forest, cut off from hobbies they could not plan for themselves.” When RAF College Cranwell first opened in 1919, it served as the world’s first air academy. RAF troops who desire to become commissioned officers receive their basic training at the Royal Air Force Education and Training School. All RAF recruitment efforts are managed by the College. A 32-week course in transformational leadership and air power studies is completed by the majority of RAF commanders (including ethics). Notable alumni include Princes Charles and William, as well as other members of the Arabian nobility.

The senior staff college of the Russian Armed Forces is known as the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Russian Federation (Russian: оеннa академи енералноо таа ооруенн ил оссиско едераии).

The academy is situated at 14 Kholzunova Lane in Moscow. Based on higher command programs developed at the M. V. Frunze Military Academy, which was established in 1918, it was formed as a Soviet school in 1936. An older General Staff Academy had been around since 1832, during the Imperial Dynasty.

Students were admitted to the Academy in the grades of lieutenant colonel, colonel, and general-major, and likely still are (one star). The majority were colonels or newly elevated generals. Typically, officers enter in their late 30s. Officers chosen for this academy would have first graduated from the relevant branch or service academy (see Military academies in Russia). Graduates who didn’t already hold the rank of general or admiral were typically promoted to it shortly after they finished the program. The branch and service academies last three years, whereas the academy only lasts two years.

In the final years of the USSR, faculty and students at the General Staff Academy engaged in discussions over the Soviet military’s restructuring. They joined Major Vladimir Lopatin’s military reform movement and offered detailed recommendations for significant force reductions.

The General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy was created in 1980 by the Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy Act, No. 68 of 1981 as the joint defense service training institute of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services—Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, and Sri Lanka Air Force—undergo academic training together before moving on to the respective service academy for additional pre-commission training.

It was given that name in honor of General Sir John Kotelawala, the third Prime Minister of Ceylon, who gave the academy his house. An amendment bill that was approved by Parliament on October 11, 2007, which allowed the admission of both military and civilian students, turned it into a university.

In order to educate and prepare officer cadets for the demands of contemporary defense administration, KDU is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (United Kingdom). KDU is now accepting applications from civil students who want to pursue advanced degrees in engineering, law, management, social sciences, and IT.

In accordance with the regulations of the service to which they belong, officers who excelled in reputable colleges or institutes may undertake postgraduate studies. The opportunity to excel and pursue a postgraduate degree in a discipline relating to their area of competence is also extended to civil professionals.

The academy, also referred to as PMA, is the top federal service-certified military school in Pakistan. It is situated on the grounds of what was once the British Army’s Physical Training and Mountaineering School and, afterwards, the Royal Indian Army Service Corps.

Brigadier Francis Ingall was named the first Commandant of the PMA following the division of the previous Indian Army. He modeled the Pakistan Military Academy after West Point, Saint-Cyr, and Sandhurst in the United Kingdom (U.S.A.). He received assistance from several former Indian Army commanders who were transferred to the Pakistani Army, including Major S.G. Mehdi, also known as “Killer Mehdi,” and Lieutenant Colonel Attiqur Rahman.

The institution offers a four-year undergraduate curriculum that includes courses in English, military geography, international affairs, Islamic studies, and military, general, and social science. To acquire the combat skills necessary for the Pakistani armed services, prospective commanders must endure physically taxing training. The educational tenet of PMA is to sustain a setting where cadets can grow in bravery, self-control, discipline, integrity, honor, and patriotism.

The academy offers all the knowledge that is necessary for officers to hold positions of responsibility. Notable alumni include former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Rahimuddin Khan, General Parvez Musharraf, and former Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaque Parvez Kayani.

According to the historian Thucydides in his History of the Peloponnesian War, the term “Evelpides” literally translates to “bearers of high hopes.” The Corinthians characterize their enemies, the Athenians, as “adventurous beyond their power, daring beyond their judgment, and bearers of high hopes when in danger.”

There are academic and military courses available, along with day and night field training. Graduates of the Academy go on to hold prestigious positions in academia and the military, as well as in science and literature. The academy produced the country’s first civil engineers as well as physics and math teachers. The Evelpides Academy also produced the first Greek Navy and Air Force officers of the Balkan Wars.
